i was reading a thread in which jh said:.

now, not to come down on jh by any means, but this raised a question in my mind.

As another non witness, I would say that the general impression my friends have of JWs is:
I enlighten them on some of the other issues. No one has a glowing impression of witnesses at all.
i am 35 years old and my mother has been a jw for the last 4 years.
i was raised as a catholic by my mother and now it is hard to understand her new religion.
i have 3 older sisters we all live several miles away from eachother so it is hard to get together at times.

I am a non JW as well, so I understand your confusion about this puzzling religious group/cult.
I suggest you do lots of research using the links at the bottom of the page.
As a never been JW, I didn't find the above mentioned book, Crisis of Conscience,
made much impact on me, although I understand it is a life changing read for JWs
(if they will go near enough to it to read. I found Diane Wilson's book,
Awakening of a Jehovah's Witness and also Steve Hassan's book about Mind Control
much more helpful.
If you are not doing celebrations, is your Mom still willing to do other things with you?
It seems a few JWs bend the rules by attending the holiday meal or gathering,
as long as there isn't any holiday activities happening at the same time or decorations.....
in other words pretending it is just another meal
I would guess that most would avoid the whole situation by not attending.
I feel very sad for you, and your poor step-father.

I thought it was an excellent, factual program. It helps innoculate the general public. I still think the average witness is a good person, but they listen to some really bad advise. I would say that this program helps change the perception of those well dressed people from just weird to scary creepy too. After all, what could they be hiding? Is that really a pedophile at your door?

I have to say that I feel the same way Jgnat does, maybe because we both look at it from an outsider's point of view.
I wonder how many witnesses will even see the program. The one JW person who I mentioned the program to just said, "anything to do with abuse they are suppposed to call the police", and felt that there never had been a problem, but even if there had, it was solved...and was not interested in watching. No progress there, which made me sad.
I suspect the politicians will use the information and integrate it into a national policy on child abuse (someday), but will not make any specific reference to any religious group.
ya know how sometimes you'll have a nice black, or very dark navy cotton shirt, and when you wash it, it has faded a bit, but there will be some dark spots where for some reason it didn't fade?
what causes that?
I have no idea, but if you add some vinegar to your rinse water, the dark colors stay dark better.

boards that are populated by ex-jws.
in the conversation we got to wondering some things, and wondered if others felt or wondered the same.

Thank you for that thoughtful reply, Hawk. If that is what the CBC wants, then I personally think that is the best thing to do. I have NO insider knowledge of the issue or program at all, but I want the maximum number of people to see it, and make up their own minds on the issues, content and evidence. Remember that we outsiders know so little of what happens in the WT. I know some very nice JW people, and I wish that they would watch the show...but I'm sure it will not happen. What it come down to for me, is that the staff of the Fifth Estate and CBC know their business, and know what will be most effective and balanced in the long term

life is very different here from what most of us on this board are used to - things like toilet paper and food are luxuries.
sometimes i wonder how i ended up fortunate enough to be born in a country as wealthy as the usa where toilets are not flushed with a bucket of water, the meat doesn't sit in the market all day covered in flies, and people make more than $4.50 a month.
I recently holidayed in Cuba and loved it. The people were warm and friendly. The beaches were lovely and the rum was sublime. The food wasn't terrific, but it was a lot better than the locals get. We had a fabulous time.
